09/12/15: With several weeks of detailed evaluations under its belt, VW has established that the vast majority of models correspond to the co2 figures originally determined, thus allowing these vehicles to be sold without concern.
Although the suspicion that consumption levels were amended has not been confirmed, only nine model variants within the brand were found to have slight deviations on the original measurement. These models are scheduled to be re-tested by a neutral technical service, under the supervision of an appropriate authority, by the end of December. Where models have no deviation on the original figures, these vehicles will be sold without restriction. Should figures be deemed incorrect, they will be adjusted by normal processes as required.
Volkswagen’s annual production of vehicles is a significant 36,000, with the nine model variants under review only contributing to 0.5% of the overall brand. The list of effected models can be found at www.volkswagen-media-services.com.
Any minor economic impact is yet to be confirmed, and is unlikely to be declared until the additional checks have taken place. In the meantime, there is some optimism that real-world co2 consumption figures have not changed. All updates regarding this issue will be published as soon as they are received.
