Automatic Gearbox Oil Change | Ridgeway Volkswagen

What we do and why?

Why does it need to be changed?

Your automatic gearbox is a very sophisticated piece of engineering that needs to be looked after with regular oil changes. The smooth 2-clutch system is computer controlled with very fine engineering tolerances. If the gearbox oil is dirty it will damage the other parts and affect the performance.

How often should the oil be changed?

The oil should be replaced every 40,000 miles, depending on your vehicle the filter may need to be changed as well. All the gearbox automatic transmission fluid (AFT) oil needs to be replaced, which is about 7 litres.

What happens if it's not changed?

Dirty oil can overheat the gearbox or cause the clutches to burnout. This will lead to poor gear selection, loss of drive and transmission failure.

What do we do?

We check the gearbox and look for any leaks. We drain the gearbox completely and replace the oil filter^ before fitting it with high quality gearbox oil that meets Volkswagen approved standards.
