Unleashed to a keen audience of over 700 journalists and VIPs (as well as a sizeable number of online viewers), the SKODA KODIAQ made its debut in Berlin on the 1st of September.
Taking the Czech brand to new and exciting territory, the KODIAQ is a cornerstone of SKODA’s SUV campaign; exceedingly comfortable, safe and connected, this formidable vehicle makes a statement not only aesthetically, but under the hood and within the dash.
Featuring elegant lines, sporty contours and signature vigour, the exterior of the vehicle is both beautiful and imposing; an intense presence on the road, the KODIAQ was designed with bear-like character. Narrow, raked headlights pave the way to a three-dimensional radiator grille, with a crystalline structure which is mimicked in the rear. Still staying true to SKODA’s artistic DNA, a long wheelbase with short overhangs compliment a large interior with angular wheel arches. The C-shaped rear lights are also distinctively SKODA, illuminated with LEDs as standard.
Standing proud at 4,697 mm in length, 1,882 mm in width and 1,676 mm in height, the SKODA KODIAQ is only 40 mm longer than the brand’s immensely popular Octavia, but still finds ample room for class-leading interior space. As SKODA’s first 7-seater vehicle, the boot has a volume of 720 to 2,065 litres; one can choose 5 seats with the option to fold down the back row, or add a third row for the full 7.
The KODIAQ will also feature SKODA’s ‘Simply Clever’ philosophy; handy design elements which make life a little easier. For example, self-folding door edge protection will protect against scrapes from walls or other vehicles, electric child safety locks will secure the rear doors and even additional comfort headrests will be available in an exclusive ‘sleep package’. All in all, over 30 ‘Simply Clever’ features are included in the KODIAQ, with 7 that have never been seen before.
Driver assistance is also a priority within the SKODA KODIAQ, showing true dedication to both safety and convenience. Trailer Assist will offer automated steering when towing, while the Area View system allows surround-view cameras to provide full visibility of the SUV’s immediate surroundings. The innovative Driver Alert system also tackles driver fatigue, detecting signs of tiredness and thus prompts the driver to take a break. In addition, the SUV can bring itself to a full stop in situations where the driver is no longer in control of the vehicle.
Boasting impressive infotainment and connectivity, the KODIAQ has the option to remain ‘always online’, with mobile online services, navigation and information all available via SKODA Connect. As standard, the Swing infotainment system will include a 6.5-inch screen, with optional smartphone Bluetooth connection and SKODA SmartLink; SmartLink seamlessly integrates Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLinkTM, with the connected phone’s screen mirrored on the infotainment display.
Under the bonnet, the SKODA KODIAQ enjoys the choice of five powertrains, two TDI and three TSI engines, with capacities of 1.4 and 2.0-litres and a power output of 92 – 140 KW. Alongside this, all engines will include a Stop-Start system, brake energy recovery and a thermos-management system, contributing to impressively low fuel consumption. Transmission type is also variable, with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6 or 7-speed DSG also on offer.
The design reflects the brand by adhering to clear and sharp edges while powerful effects are created via chiselled surfaces. The SUV character is emphasised via the imaginative custom of plastics at the front of the bonnet. The side view demonstrates the strong SUV charm with sharp tornado lines across the prevailing car figure. Similarly, the rear has been sculpted with large exhaust pipes along with the SKODA logo being situated in prime place.
