The number of vehicles affected by London’s Low Emission Zone will increase significantly from the start of 2012, Transport For London has announced.
The LEZ covers most of Greater London. To drive within it without paying a daily charge, vehicles must meet certain emissions standards.
From 3 January 2012 these standards will become tougher, and more vehicles will be affected, including vans, pick-ups, 4x4 utilities and other specialist vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, plus minibuses with more than nine seats (including the driver’s).
Unless they were registered before 1 January 2002, they won’t meet the Euro III emissions standards and will have to pay the £100 daily charge – or have a filter retro-fitted. Around 150,000 vehicles are thought likely to fall into the net of the new regulations.
