| Britain’s most profitable speed cameras |
 |
A new set of speed cameras on a 40mph stretch of the A1139 in Peterborough is on target to issue 3,000 tickets in its first month of operation. Previously, the most prolific camera was on the M11 in Essex, which issues around tickets 9,000 a year and raises over £500,000 a year from motorists. The cameras are at the approach to roadworks and Nigel Humphries, at the Association of British Drivers, claimed that temporary road limits were excessive. “It's shocking,” he said. “Usually when that number of people are getting caught it shows that the limit is ludicrous. We want to see limits reflecting the topography of the roads, within the proximity of roadworks and removed at night when works are closed.” Clinton Hale, manager of the Cambridgeshire police Safety Camera Unit, said: “The limit was put in place following national policy, which advises that roads with works taking place should be limited to 40mph. ”We are now trying to make motorists more aware of the speed limit by putting up more signs.” |
