How to stay safe this winter​

​A few tips to keep you on the road.

The following tips will help you adjust to the adverse weather and longer periods of darkness.

1.Prepare your vehicle

a.Ensure lights are clean and working,

b.Check Windscreen, wiper blades and other windows are clean

c.Check tyre condition and pressure

d.Ensure fluids are kept topped up

2.Emergency kit

a.It is important to make sure you are prepared for a worst case scenario, your emergency kit should include:

i.Tow rope

ii.Wellington boots

iii.Hazard warning triangle

iv.De-icing equipment

v.First aid kit

vi.A working torch


viii.Mobile Phone/Phone charger

3.When driving in snow or ice reduce your speed to increase your stopping distance.

4.When driving in snow or ice, do not stop on an incline as it will be harder to gain traction again.

5.Avoid harsh braking and acceleration

6.Aquaplaning can be avoided by reducing speed in wet conditions. If it happens, ease off the accelerator and brakes slowly in order to allow the tyres to make contact with the road again.

7.Avoid driving in fog unless your journey is absolutely necessary

a.The highway-code states that fog lights must be used when visibility is less than 100 metres – roughly the length of a football pitch.
